Here is a great site that covers most of what MIDI is
http://www.borg.com/~jglatt/tech/midispec.htm
There is a 'What is MIDI' link to
http://www.borg.com/~jglatt/tech/midispec.htm
to start with the basics

Mark's excellent pdf is a description of what messages you can send to the BCR200 /BCF200 controllers to program them from the PC and what sort of MIDI answers you can expect back from the units. Behringer won't give out this information and Mark has pieced it all together.
It is all about BCR/BCF sysex messages. You should probably read up on MIDI if you don't know what sysex means
As far as the BCR/BCF are concerned, there is quite a bit of stuff you can program from a PC that you can't program using the controls on the unit. This is particularly useful when controlling a hardware synth with the BCR/BCF, but also good if you want to emulate various other controllers (there is a great Mackie emulator in the files section)
The birdie editor does a great job of taking what can be edited on the unit and letting you program it on the PC, but all the 'other' stuff is a bit hard to program with this editor.
Mark is currently writing a whiz-bang editor with all the new features he has found out. So stay tuned...
All the best
