BCR2000

2009-07-04 by Albert King

Hi Royce,
I have ordered the BCR2000 and it should arrive here on Tuesday. I plan on controlling all aspects required for both the Yamaha VL70M and the Roland XV-2020 tone generators (synths), to make quick changes needed for live performance. I will use both the Yamaha WX-5 (90% of the time_my most comfortable instrument) wind controller and the AKAI EWI4000s wind synthesizer (10 % of the time_which I have had for only a few months and am still learning). The WX-5 has breath control and midi outputs and I will only be using the breath control (WX in on the VL70M). This still allows midi control of the VL70M from the BCR2000 via the VL70M's midi in jack real time. The EWI4000s will be a bit more complicated in that it has an internal built in synth as well as the capability to midi control my two synths. Hardware configuration wise there are many different ways to connect all this gear and I would like to bounce some questions out there to determine which way is best to approach this. Then I have some general requirements that will influence the programming of the BCR2000.
Should the midi inputs to both synths be separate? i.e. BCR2000 midi out A into the VL70M and BCR2000 midi out B into the XV-2020 or should I daisy chain them (midi in --> midi thru or out--> midi in).
I have noticed that when I use the VL70M's WX IN on the front it does not send midi data to the XV-2020 unless I connect the midi to midi out (not thru) on the VL70M to midi in on the XV-2020. Here are the possibilities:
WX-5 -->VL70M WX-IN, BCR2000 midi out A --> VL70M midi in --> VL70M midi out --> XV-2020 midi in
connect the EWI4000s to the BCS2000 midi in
(or reverse which synth gets the midi first)
OR
WX-5 --> VL70M WX IN, BCR2000 midi out A to VL70M midi in and BCR2000 midi out B to XV-2020 midi in
connect the EWI4000s to the BCS2000 midi in
Here are some other functions of programming that I am interested in:
in order of importance...
1 encoder to select the proper key for both VL70M XV-2020 synths simultaneously.
1 encoder to select any patch in the VL70M
1 encoder to select any patch in the XV-2020
1 encoder to select volume in the VL70M
1 encoder to select volume in the XV-2020
1 encoder to select patches in the EWI4000s
1 encoder to select volume in the EWI4000s
1 encoder to select the proper key for EWI4000s (possibly add this to first encoder on the list if the string in not too long)
1 encoder to select octave in the VL70M
1 encoder to select octave in the XV-2020
1 on/off switch for "hold" button on EWI4000s
1 on/off switch for "octave" button on EWI4000s
1 increment switch for "hold" on EWI4000s when used as + inc.
1 decrement switch for "octave" on EWI4000s when used for - dec.
I will think of more later but these are the important ones.
I appreciate what you have done and continue to do for all the BCR2000 users out there and especially the great help you are giving me on my quest to provide a great live performance. You and Mark deserve some $$ and after the dust settles on this project I will be sending you some. I would say to all out there in BC land to help these guys out if they help you.... send some money to Mark on his site. They couldn't be more helpful to us. Thanks again. Best.....

Hi Royce,
I do need your help if possible. I am including the PDF's for the equipment I want to control. I also want to keep the presets down to a minimum.
Basic start off questions....
1. I want to use out A for the XV-2020 and out B for the VL70M and then use the XV-2020 thru to control the EWI4000s. Is that better than daisy chaining? I don't plan on using the EWI4000 a lot but that will change as I get more comfortable with it.
2. I want to select the different banks of instruments in all devices. Should that be a separate encoder or switch? The actual instrument selection within the bank would be another encoder.
3. Should each of the devices I want to control be on a separate preset?i.e.
VL70M on preset 1, XV-2020 on preset 2, and EWI4000s on preset 3 or can I do everything from preset 1?
4. Can you show me an example of an sysex edit to a switch and encoder?
5. What would the sysex message look like to program all three devices to change key simultaneously? Could that be done with an encoder?
I have the BCR2000 now and I am ready to begin programming but with so many options I don't know where to start. I have connected the BCR2000 midi in to my sysex editor midi out and BCR2000 midi out A to XV-2020 and BCR2000 midi out B to the VL70M. Also... How do you tell the BCR2000 to output either to midi out A or B
I await your sysex string programming examples so I can get started. Thanks Royce....Al

Hi Al

I want to thank you for being so helpful. I will follow your suggestion and contact Mark if I can find him. Sorry I didn't catch on that you're in Australia. I might buy a BCR2000 and be done with this hassle.... Is the BCR2000 easier to use and handle the longer sysex messages?
Mark and I have just about completely pulled apart this machine (and its 'fader' brother BCF2000). They are fantastic. Mind bogging on what you can program them to do.
For some reason Behringer wont tell anyone what the BCR/BCF can really do. So Mark took all our info and wrote a compete guide including all the things Behringer didn't want you to know.
It is also on his web site.
There is heaps of stuff on the BC2000 yahoo group as well.
The total length of message is 125 bytes as I recall, which can be multiple sysex messages, so your XV 13 bytes + the VL70 message will easily fit.
You could put all 12 transpose keys on one rotary dial and it will even calculate the checksum Roland gear needs at the end of its sysex message.

After I completed my 'tech' editor Mark built a great graphic editor, which is much better and is available free at the Mountain Utilities site I sent you.
Someone gave him a Nano to play with (some people have a lot of spare cash :-) ) so he could write the Nano editor. I haven't ever used one so I am useless to you.
If you do get a BCR/BCF (also great for working with a DAW) let me know and I'll try to help you build the preset you need for your live setup.

Anyway, I hope I find someone who is doing what I am trying to do, with a quarter of the helpfulness that you have shown me.... If you are ever coming to Florida please let me know and maybe we can jam or something. You have been a great help to me. Thanks again. Al
Sunny Florida, sounds great, here in winter rainy Melbourne.
Love the web page by the way. Very cool.

Hi Albert,
I am still struggling.... on the Yamaha VL70M you can get the command string by hitting "enter" twice in rapid succession and it gives the command string, which I used to program the Nano. The strings are only 9 pairs long including F0 and F7 example= F0 43 1F 57 00 00 06 3F F7. That's "C". The Nano accepts these strings no problem. The strings you gave me for the XV-2020 are 13 pairs and the Nano only accepts up to 11 pairs. The Nano is calling these strings "bad". Can the strings be shortened some how?
No the sysex is as it is.You can't change it.

I don't have a Nano, so Mark (he wrote the editor) would be your best bet.
Try the Yahoo BC2000 group to get in touch with him .
The BCR2000 would do this easily, but I guess that won't help you.

If you are only using a few sounds you could reprogram each of the Patches with the transposition you need and save that.
ASax in C = User 1
TSax in C = User 2
..
ASax in C# = User 11
TSax in C# = User 12
..
ASax in D = User 21
TSax in D = User 22
..
etc.
To further explain what I am trying to do..... I am playing my WX-5 using WX IN and my EWI4000s using midi. The Nano output midi is controlling my VL70M completely including volume, instrument selection, and all 12 keys of transpose. I have 3 presets and each preset I programmed 4 switches for a total of 12 for the 12 keys. The VL70M is my primary workhorse but I want to sometimes use my XV-2020 to layer or play certain instruments. I can select these instruments by hand and that's OK. My real requirement is to transpose the XV-2020 to match my VL70M key settings. I can quickly select an instrument using the knobs on the XV-2020 but changing key takes too long and is awkward during performances.
The preset edit could be the answer although it is a lot of editing. Sorry

maybe we could talk on the phone... (352-237-6708)East Coast if you don't mind. Thanks Best Al check out my website... http://aljazzmanking.com
I'm in Australia and it would be a bit expensive as well as being out a time zone or 10 . Sorry.

All the best

Royce

Hi Albert,
sorry about the late reply. I've been away working for a few days.

To the rest of the group... is this too specific a problem and should I
just send help with an email to Al??

BCR2000

2016-06-02 by Bob Turak

I also picked up a BCR2000 which I probably won't keep. Seems like you need to program everything from scratch. Was debating between it and the BCF2000, which seems much easier to use as it9;s already got Cubase presets. If I add a track in Cubase the BCF sees it, the BCR doesn't.

Does anyone know where I might find some preset files for the BCR?

Thanks again,
Bob

Hi Bob,
have you checked the files section here in this Yahoo group? What presets other than Cubase are you looking for?
Best regards,
Daniel

Hey Daniel,

Didn’t even notice there was a file section, thanks!

Will do some experimenting this weekend.

Cheers,
