bcr2000 sysex to MKS-7

bcr2000 sysex to MKS-7

2011-01-24 by god bless everyone

Hi,
Have tried a few things to get sysex strings to Roland MKS-7. I have a mac, no PC. And have failed. :(

To start I tried loading the MKS50 sysex onto bcr, got "Er 6". Then tried loading MKS50 sysex ad bcr file both to BC Editor. Said it wasn't the proper file. I tried editing the MKS50 sysex file in text edit and I don't think that will work because there are a bunch of extra apple glyphs appearing in the text.

Can anyone out there help me get these sysex strings into my MKS-7? I pretty much want them in this order for the encoders:

chord parameter changes:

vca level F0 41 32 02 10 48 F7

env attack F0 41 32 02 11 48 F7

env decay F0 41 32 02 12 48 F7

env sustain F0 41 32 02 13 48 F7

env release F0 41 32 02 14 48 F7

vcf cutoff freq F0 41 32 02 05 48 F7

vcf resonance F0 41 32 02 06 48 F7

sub level F0 41 32 02 15 48 F7

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Avalon

Hi Didier,
Do you mean BCEdit? I tried using it but no where see where to insert sysex strings for the encoders. Will keep at it. Can anybody out there tell me if it possible to get sysex strings onto the bcr2000 without learning to write my own code for the bcr2000?

thanks,
Avalon

Re: bcr2000 sysex to MKS-7

2011-02-01 by god bless everyone

Anybody figured out a way for a bcr2000 to control their Roland mks-7? Mks-7 doesn't send midi so I can't use the learn function. I have a Mac.

BC edit isn't talking to my brc2000 that I can tell. I can send sysex files to it using sysex librarian and my midi. I want to try to load my edited mks50.bc2 file [which I assume is the bcr2000 file format?], which I've edited for my mks7, onto the bcr2000, using it's sysex strings.

I got an edited sysex file for the mks50 file with mks7 sysex [or so I think, because the strings are shorter] onto the bcr, switched mode to stand alone and no changes to mks-7 when playing, and it is default ready to receive exclusive messages I believe.

What am I missing?

If anybody who has programmed sysex with the bcr2000 before and can see a Mac doing it, please have mercy on me. :)

Re: bcr2000 sysex to MKS-7

Finally just tried the simple solution of getting my friend's Juno 106 knob changes into the bcr2000 using its learning feature. Totally works for controlling the MKS-7! The bass synth doesn't have some of the parameters as the other two synths but everything else is pretty much the same. I even assigned octave buttons on the bcr! stoked.

Re: bcr2000 sysex to MKS-7

2011-10-06 by novasatori999

I've been having some problems with this as well. I don't have access to a Juno 106 to use the learn function and the BCManager program is incredibly complicated and time consuming to learn and feel confident using. I THINK I've got it mostly figured out in BCManager, but I'm encountering several problems:

1- BCManager isn't syncing with my BCR 100% of the time, so I've been unable to test to see if my work in BCManager is actually correct. Sometimes it can detect the device, sometimes not and there seems to be no rhyme or reason to it. It seems that if it doesn't recognize it right off the bat then no changes I make (selecting alternate midi ports, etc) will fix the problem. I can access the device thru multiple DAWs just fine, but can't get BCManager to discover it.

2- I'm unsure how the SysEx strings should look for the 'button' functions on the MKS such as waveform, range, chorus, etc. Consulting the chart in the back of the MKS manual shows me a diagram for the buttons and lists them in a chart, but it doesn't give an example of what that SysEx string is supposed to look like, it only shows what it looks like with a normal parameter like cutoff/resonance/amp. Can someone post an example of what this should look like? What's the string I'd need to input to control the waveform vs the string for controlling the chorus on/off? Additionally, can I assign on/off to the same button (ie, press once it turns on, press again, turns off) or do I have to assign 'on' to one button on the BCR and 'off' to a different button?

3- When entering the SysEx string manually into BCManager, it only accepts it if I put "$" in front of each group of #s. It ends up looking like this - $F0 $41 $32 $01 $10 $48 $F7 Is that right?

Sorry, I don't know much about SysEx messages and the BCManager is not intuitive at all, so the process has been extremely daunting.

BC Manager is supposed to find your BCR very easily at all times (e.g. by means of its autodetection scheme).
I can think of many reasons why this might not (seem to) work, but before I start making suggestions that don't apply to your situation, you may have a look at several relevant sections in the BC Manager manual:
- section 6
- section 8 (in particular the descriptions of the columns)
- section 24 (FAQ) -> MIDI communication (e.g. questions 32 and 44)

If all of this doesn't help you to fix your problem, we can discuss your setup further: which Operating Mode you're using, what you see in the "MIDI devices" dialog box, what the "B-Controls" window says, etc.

> 3- When entering the SysEx string manually into BCManager, it only accepts it if I put "$" in front of each group of #s. It ends up looking like this - $F0 $41 $32 $01 $10 $48 $F7 Is that right?

Basically yes: the $ prefix is part of the BCR's setup protocol ("BCL"): it indicates that the following number is in hexadecimal notation.

However, in BC Manager's "Output statement" dialog box, the "Paste bare hexadecimal sequence" is supposed to allow you to paste a sequence of "bare" hexadecimals (e.g. "F0 41") from the Windows clipboard: BC Manager should then add the $ prefixes for you (=> "$F0 $41").
BUT: I've just discovered that this doesn't actually work in the latest BC Manager versions (2.2.0-2.3.1). The next version of BC Manager will fix this.

Hope this helps,
Mark.

Thanks, Mark.

I've gotten BCManager to sync with the BCR regularly now, so I think I'm OK on that front.

I noticed the problem you mentioned with BCM not accepting the bare hexadecimals, so I ended up adding the $ myself.

I sent the data to the BCR and it was successful, but I'm still unable to control the MKS. I've compared the SysEx strings to make sure they're correct and the proper midi channels are entered in, so I'm not sure where the problem lies. This is in Standalone Mode 1 with the MKS on midi OUT B.

In BCM, when I double click on a cell I've added SysEx to, the box that comes up shows the SysEx #s in the left column, but there are values in the other 2 columns and I'm not sure what they represent and if I should change them or not. If I change those #s it effects the #s from the SysEx string. Could these numbers effect whether or not the BCR and MKS are communicating properly?

I'm not sure what else could be the problem, but it's very frustrating that I've had the BCR for 3 weeks now and I've been spending all my minimal studio time trying to get this damn thing to work, reading manuals and troubleshooting instead of making music.

Re: bcr2000 sysex to MKS-7

Couple of questions

Does the S1 mode give you to midi topology you require?
Sorry I havent checked the routing ... I just know for standalone control of the Miniak I use S3 with In from keyboard, and out from Midi A to my star splitter.

Silly question but when you send the same sysex from MidiOx (say) it works right? And it is only when you add the BC Manager into the equation that it stops working?

Which window or dialog box are you talking about exactly?
(BC Manager has quite a lot of them...)

Does anyone have a preset for the Roland MKS-7 or Juno 106?
It seems to be the hardest thing to find and program since the unit has no midi out for the learn function.
Much appreciated.

You could look here
http://http://ctrlr.org/

There is a device panel on this page called jumbo the elephat
http://ctrlr.org/page.php?p=ddb

You set this up, and as someone here suggested, use it to program your BCR through Midi learn. When you've done that you could try uploading the file to the group for other BCR users to try?

The sysex info appears to be here on my old friend Nigel Spencer's website synthzone

From that page......... Mode III Midi switch on back of Juno

Thanks. I had actually tried this a while ago but could not get the switches or buttons to learn correctly. The knob/slider functions work well however.
