BCR-2000 Preset not saving??... Makes using Ableton Live a pain in the ableton.

BCR-2000 Preset not saving??... Makes using Ableton Live a pain in the ableton.

2012-04-22 by daz303@rocketmail.com

Hi again ... another problem, another question...

Are the 32 presets in the BCR2000 separate from each other?

My BCR2000 came preloaded with a selection of 14 presets - most of them of no use to me. The first pre-set was the Behringer "All Rotary Controls" patch so I copied this preset into the first 6 preset spaces as I was going to modify these for various VSTs.

I kept preset 1 (all rotary) as my blank to map the functions in Ableton Live 8. I had heaps of trouble getting BCR and Ableton to talk to each other but eventually got them to communicate (btw - the only way to get them to talk was using a midi-USB cable ... ableton wouldn't recognise the BCR if it was connected only via USB and the BCR in USB mode).

I had to manually map the Ableton functions to the BCR... Initially, I got Ableton to do a midi dump which the BCR picked up... Unfortunately, this map layout was limited to only 8 Ableton tracks which were assigned to the bottom row of rotary dials plus a few buttons assigned to transport functions... not very useful - that's why i had to manually map Ableton.

Anyway, I assigned various controllers to various functions in Preset #1, saved the changes as per the manual and so far so good.... it worked very well. I wanted to then use Preset #2 (which also contained the All Rotary preset) to map different functions in Ableton such as VSTs. I switched to preset 2 only to find that all of the controls I mapped in preset 1 were also in preset 2!!! I couldn't re-map preset 2 without altering preset 1 (I didn't check out the other presets.... should have done this in hindsight)

Worse than this, the mapping in preset 1 disappeared after I switched everything off and re-booted ... I think the map might still be in preset 1 but it wont control Ableton. How do I know if it saved?

Anyway - I suppose my question is whether all of the presets are separate from each other. I tried using two different presets within the same software ie. same software (ableton) and two maps - but this didnt work... should it work or have I got it completely wrong?

LASTLY - for those of you who use the BCR2000 with Ableton Live 8 - how are you connecting the two together? I can't get 100% reliability between the two and can't figure out if it's a user problem (ie. ME!!) or there's something wrong with the controller or Ableton. Can you please tell me the cable you use ie. USB only or USB-Midi, the BCR mode and importantly, the Ableton Midi preferences (what do you switch on/off).

God I hate computers

thanks for your help and patience!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Daz,
I had a similar experience getting mine to handshake, I found the manual very confusing, and part of my job is IT administration, I eventually got it to handshake using USB (after about 40hrs)

Apologies for brevity of previous post I was on mobile phone which is torturous for typing.
I read many of the posts regarding this peculiarity, but eventually I managed to get mine to work via experimentation, unfortunately my memory fails me here and I couldn't say exactly what I did that finally made it work, however these are just some of the the things I tried which may be helpful as each pc has it's own peculiarities. I tried with midi, with usb, with both midi and usb. The editor works with one and cubase works I believe with the midi. In cubase I set the BCR in the remote devices utility within the devices setup. I dearly wanted to download the setup file for the Cubase that somebody must have created before, but in the end I learnt more by "programming" the handshake within Cubase. There are U modes and S modes on th BCR I think U3 is what I settled on, any way I think if you persevere you will get it right. Can't be more specific as I have been away from the BCR for four months.
