Are the BCR2000 and BCF2000 CPU boards interchageable?

Are the BCR2000 and BCF2000 CPU boards interchageable?

2016-02-15 by Ron Anderson

Aside from the firmware chip of coarse, does anybody know if the cpu boards can be swapped on these devices.
I have managed to static zap two of my 3 bcr2000s and now they exhibit differing failure modes that follows the main boards when swapped. One is an Unknown device in device manager and the other one has the usb light that goes on when you plug in the usb then goes out for good.

I have 4 bcf2000s that I am eyeing with bad intent thinking one of them may have to be a doner.
I could swap the boards as I am using the BCF2000s in 5 pin MIDI DIN mode. :-)

If you look in the photo section there is one of my photos of my BCR and one of Tekrytor's of a BCF (you can see the motors of the faders)

There are early photo so it may have changed but they are marked "Behringer Control CPU" on both boards so I can't see why they are not swappable.

As you have the both in front of you have a look.
Check the voltages (start with the supply) on both boards.
If they are the different open another unit and check to see which one is correct.

Swap the eeprom and hope that the eeprom isn't also damaged.

All the best

Yes! , yes they are!
This morning I marked with a sharpie the usb connector on the BCR2000 board with an R and opened a BCF2000 and marked the usb connector F. (Aren't I clever).
That's when I saw it. A ground strap from the screw that holds the cpu board down closest to the usb port to the usb port itself. - No kiddin. The 3 BCR2000s that I have have no such grounding strap from the usb connector to chassis ground. I keep compromising them with what only I can presume is static. We like at 9800 feet up in the mountains where the humidity is around zero and you get shocked off everything we touch.
Anyway I thought that telling, as I have never had one of my 4 bcf2000s fail in the years I have had them.

I proceeded to swap the EPROM chips after marking them as well and put the BCF2000 board in the BCR2000 that was exhibiting "Unknown Device' in device manager. I readied device manager and powered up the BCR2000 with the BCF's cpu board in it. Not only did it post normally, but device manager found a BCR2000! - have the behringer driver installed. - Hurray!

Now to see if the BCF2000 will work as if had been in MIDI mode (S-1) and mackie emulation as I like it.
I put the BCR2000 board in the BCF and hooked it up to my MidiSport 2x2. I powered it up and the display said McSo as it should in Mackie Emu mode. Also the faders all reset as expected too. So I started Sonar and added a Mackie control surface on the midi ports and ya know, it works! BC mode works too.
So aside from some esoteric config that may be troublesome, this swapperoo is a success!
I am going to add the ground strap to my bcr2000s while they're open.

Re: [bc2000] Re: Are the BCR2000 and BCF2000 CPU boards interchageable?

Well done Ron.

I was wrong, it was a hardware problem.

This is an interesting observation and solution. When I bought my new BCF (I already had a a BCR) the USB worked for a short time then failed. Checked it at firend that had been using his for quite a while, Mine was broken, his was fine. He said I could open both to compare, but as mine was brand new I wasn't too keen.

I took it back to the store and they tested it and it failed so they gave me a new one in a box and I happily went home. It worked for about an hour then failed.

Back to the store. "Yep, it is stuffed. I'll let Behringer know. You can have you money back" How about the display model? "OK lets test it. Works OK, its yours." (Great guys at the DJ Warehouse here in Melbourne)

Been good ever since, but I saw a lot of similar problems from other frustrated people.
I thought it was a bad batch or CPUs as my first 2 had similar serial numbers but the demo unit was a lot earlier.

Perhaps this is solution for all those machines. Well done.

All the best
Royce
