The AUS$19 calculated by the shopping cart is based on insured airmail to
the US and is (as stated in the closing comment of the shopping cart and in
the guidelines) based on the worst case scenario in terms of packaging size
and weight. Although it would be nice if the shopping cart could accurately
estimate costs but it can't and so I have to factor in the worst case cost.
It would be easier to leave the shipping and insurance costs off and advise
the buyer when the order is received but, despite the comments on the web to
not pay before receipt of a confirmation from me, some people do pay
straight away. It is hard to then go back to those purchasers and request
`more money' for shipping and insurance.
I do say I will get back and confirm and I always have done. Wherever there
is a cost saving in the final package I do advise the buyer.
As an example, buying TEMPCO resistors and sending uninsured to the states
cost a total of AUS$9.50. Howard paid a few dollars extra for freight and
received a number of items in the order which greatly offset the
freight/item cost. It is an unfortunate law of modern realism that with
greater fears of terrorism etc that freight and insurance costs are on the
up and a low dollar-value order will have a disproportionate cost factor in
freight/insurance. The large the dollar value of the order, the smaller the
freight/insurance cost per item will be.
