Bi-N-Tic Filter

Bi-N-Tic Filter

2005-04-25 by charlesosthelder

Now this is COOL!!!

Two multiplexers for very steep slopes and a real vco for control! I
can't wait to see this pcb in the mail!

Most switched capacitor filters utilize a single 4051, clocked by a
4046 VCO with a 4024 or 4040 divder. These are pretty popular for
audio filtering in amateur radio. A circuit like the Bi-N-Tic would
be way too extreme, however. In synthesis, extreme = fun!

One question, Ken - the 4051 pin #8 is usually at 0V for a signal
swing from Vdd - Vee. In some cases, both pins 7 and 8 are at 0v.
Why did you use this bias arrangement with both #7 and #8 at the -
7vdc? I'm sure your reasoning is sound, I just want to learn.

Thanks!

Actually ... my circuit diagram is wrong.... pin 8 should be at 0V as you
suggest. Well spotted. The PCBs are correct.

Yes, it looks weird and exciting!

I'd love to see a simple diagram of the suggested extra feedback circuit from the unused
division outs... it looks exciting too

Thanks Ken!

Fernando

It's gotta be if it's filter that trip's Ken's fancy. This looks like a
very exciting design - I'd love to hear one.

Hi,
can anyone help me with a source for the tempco resistor in the USA
for the Bi-N-Tic Filter?

thanks

Re: Bi-N-Tic Filter Tempco resistor help?

2005-04-26 by Ryan Williams

try http://www.precisionresistor.com they have a +3500ppm/degC for $3.1
each, but i think the minimum order is like $25. if +3500 is not good
enough for you, they will make another value custom but it'll cost more.

For 1K tempco resistors (in small quantities) you have 3 choices that I
know of: Elby Designs, Oakley Sound and EFM.

Re: Bi-N-Tic Filter Tempco resistor help?

2005-04-26 by Adam Schabtach

If these things are hard to get in small quantities, would there be any
sense in Ken buying a bunch and selling them along with the PCBs? Maybe
enough of us could commit to buying the resistor and PCB to make it worth
his time/effort/money to buy a bunch of these resistors?

Re: Bi-N-Tic Filter Tempco resistor help?

2005-04-26 by charlesosthelder

The Precision Resistor people are great to work with. Any size
order, above the minimum, is shipped fast. I bought enough resistors
to cover the minimum, but now with the Bi-N-Tic filter added to my
two VCO's, I wish I'd gotten more! After all, they do keep and I
know I'll be building more stuff.

Bi-N-Tic Filter

2005-05-06 by Jeff Brown

Wow.

I just got one Bi-N-Tic filter up and running. I wired up a temporary
panel with both the basic and additional wiring. The additional wiring
option is definitely worthwhile.

I have had all the parts for some time - I'd been planning on building
one ever since I read about it in Electronotes a couple of years ago.
Thanks for making the PCB, Ken!

This is one outrageous module! I wasn't sure what to expect. It is
capable of quite an array of effects. The original Electronotes
article mentioned vocal like sounds. I did indeed get them at lower
bandwidth settings, but they sure weren't human! I'll definitely be
building the second one, and silk-screening decent panels for them.

Excellent, Jeff!

My pcb is still on the bench, but it'll be populated this weekend.
I'm glad to hear your enthusiastic report and I'll definately be
adding the switch for the divider feedback option.

Thanks!

I uploaded a FPD for this filter, any thoughts? Improvements? What
did I leave out?

Looks good to me, you included all the options in a neat MOTM format 2U
panel. Only other possibilities could be CV in and FM in amount pots
that would just fit on the panel.

Re: Bi-N-Tic Filter

2005-05-07 by Richard Brewster

I just uploaded another FPD panel design for the Bi-N-Tic. My idea is
to use a CGS56 gate converter board to buffer the 4 counter outputs,
which I call SUB1-4 on the panel. These are +/-5V outputs. Internally
they go to the SUB IN selector switch, followed by the SUB LEVEL
attenuator and into IN 2 on the board. I didn't include an IN2 jack or
switch position. Instead I used panel space for the 4 SUB outputs plus
a linear FM input. I also added an FM CV attenuator pot.

It seems to me that it's worth treating this as a real VCO with top
quality parts. After all it is just like the CGS VCO core. The
addition of the SUB outputs allows it to be used just as a VCO if
desired. I tend to use a lot of square waves anyway. Having the 4
octave outs allows mixing them externally, too, possibly to be fed back
to the Bi-N-Tic input.

The cost of my panel design can be cut quite a bit if you remove all the
tic marks. I have to include them for myself, so as to match all the
others I have.

Did you really pay AUD$19 shipping for them? I was going to order from them, too, until I
saw that fee... sadly, it may be the only option.

Re: Bi-N-Tic Filter Tempco resistor help?

2005-05-15 by Laurie Biddulph

The AUS$19 calculated by the shopping cart is based on insured airmail to
the US and is (as stated in the closing comment of the shopping cart and in
the guidelines) based on the worst case scenario in terms of packaging size
and weight. Although it would be nice if the shopping cart could accurately
estimate costs but it can't and so I have to factor in the worst case cost.

It would be easier to leave the shipping and insurance costs off and advise
the buyer when the order is received but, despite the comments on the web to
not pay before receipt of a confirmation from me, some people do pay
straight away. It is hard to then go back to those purchasers and request
`more money' for shipping and insurance.

I do say I will get back and confirm and I always have done. Wherever there
is a cost saving in the final package I do advise the buyer.

As an example, buying TEMPCO resistors and sending uninsured to the states
cost a total of AUS$9.50. Howard paid a few dollars extra for freight and
received a number of items in the order which greatly offset the
freight/item cost. It is an unfortunate law of modern realism that with
greater fears of terrorism etc that freight and insurance costs are on the
up and a low dollar-value order will have a disproportionate cost factor in
freight/insurance. The large the dollar value of the order, the smaller the
freight/insurance cost per item will be.

Re: Bi-N-Tic Filter Tempco resistor help?

2005-05-15 by Richard Brewster

Mr. Biddulph, I have a question about ordering VCO parts. Your order
form allows to order the 1K TEMPCO resistor (kit with 62R), and in
another place to order the Special Components for ASM-2 VCOs, which
includes:

2 TEMPCO resistor kits
2 MAT-02/LM394
3 J108 FET

I bought this Special Component package back when I was building two of
Ken Stone's VCOs. Now I am wondering if you might make a kit of *one*
set of these parts available, which would benefit us folks building CGS
VCOs and now the Bi-N-Tic filters?

1 TEMPCO resistors
1 MAT-02/LM394
1 J108 FET

Thanks,

Richard Brewster
