Have you thought about building a PAIA 9700? Great, cheap way to start, and
a good introduction to DIY synths. Once you have it up and running, you'll
be able to figure out what you need next - it will become quite obvious.
Ken's modules are fantastic, but require a lot of work to get together
(ordering parts, building panels, selecting what I/O to run to the panel,
etc.). I wouldn't really recommend starting your modular with a CGS48 VCO.
Starting with complete/full kits is easier, and will give you the courage to
build from just a printed board (and eventually print your own boards).
just my $0.02
