scott,

you're right, there are a lot of options available, and it's a good problem to have figuring out priorities. for most folks who get into modulars, it's a constant evolution... i've said "just one more rack's worth" more than once.

but, given your parameters (paia as a starting system, add one rack, more "interesting" sounds, solid building skills) here's a completely subjective list of suggestions:

*1 CGS VCO, implementing as many options as you can cram into 1 full panel (won't be all possible options)
*1 CGS dual LFO (likely to take a full panel unless you cut options)
*1 Blacet Improbability Drive--noise plus sample/hold
*1 Wiard filter, either the Borg or Boogie... or a Blacet Filthy
*1 CGS Steiner filter, without attenuators on the inputs so you can fit it into 1/2 rack
*1 CGS Megamixer, as much as you can fit on 1/2 rack--i think i could squeeze in 4 inputs/no master

Close seconds would be a Blacet dual linear VCA (instead of the mixer?); Blacet VCO or Blacet/Wiard Miniwave (instead of CGS VCO?); Wiard Noise Ring (instead of the Improbability Drive); CGS Real Ring modulator (1/2 space, built w/ opamp buffers on ins & outs); CGS Psycho LFO (1/2 space)... Blacet VCADSR (or, if there was a 1/2space AR generator, maybe Metalbox did one once)... and, and... man, this is tuff.

again, this is COMPLETELY 100% subjective, based on my own experience. obviously, a lot depends on your what you're musical aims are... i'm more of a textural/noizy/westcost kind of a guy; electro/sequency of melodic folks would have very different opinions.

have fun!

Wanted to thank everyone for the input all these many months. Not
sure that I ever introduced myself, but am Paul and have been a part
of this group for a while, just reading and trying to make sense of
what I want with my music studio. I have put off writing anything as
I really was not sure what to say. That is until now. I am one of
those electro/melodic folks and frankly don't have a clue what to
build first. If I could get some ideas on where to start, that would
be great.

Well first a power supply then a MIDI to CV then a VCO. Or you could just
buy a power one power supply and the MIDI to CV converter. One piece at a
time over a long period of time. That's how I started.

Have you thought about building a PAIA 9700? Great, cheap way to start, and
a good introduction to DIY synths. Once you have it up and running, you'll
be able to figure out what you need next - it will become quite obvious.
Ken's modules are fantastic, but require a lot of work to get together
(ordering parts, building panels, selecting what I/O to run to the panel,
etc.). I wouldn't really recommend starting your modular with a CGS48 VCO.
Starting with complete/full kits is easier, and will give you the courage to
build from just a printed board (and eventually print your own boards).

just my $0.02

p.s. loving my new super-psycho LFO!

Recommended purchase or build order for modular synthesizer (generic):

Power Supply
VCF (you can use this to process other instruments)
LFO (add modulator for VCF)
Envelope Generator (trigger from LFO, use for more VCF modulation)
VCA (use EG to modulate for audio gating effects)
VCO (your audio signal source)
MIDI-CV converter (use MIDI keyboard to control, you now have a simple but
complete modular voice circuit)
