Hi Ken , Dmitri and all
I don't know why but after removing the L to S connection this time , the 100n Cap next door to the CA3080 didn't burn and the 'STEPPED' section is working finally.
Apart from removing the L to S all i did was reflow a couple of resistor joints that looked a bit dodgy (even though they were beeping under continuity testing). Go figure...
So without the L to S wire it's just two SMOOTH ; is that right ?

Looks like that's what Dmitri intended , which I didn't know until last night. I'm suspicious of one of the J201 legs as I found a bit of what looked like a ice of track on it. Going to check it when I get home.
From the photos it looks okay to me. It's hard to tell on the track side for obvious reasons. Have you tried to simply get it to work as a Smooth, by leaving out the link between L and S?

Ended up swapping it out for a Serge Wave Mult.I'll try the trimmer again too. Thanks , I'll keep you all posted.
