Panel question

Panel question

2004-12-24 by darkboneus

Hello. I have been looking at the design of the old Moog modulars
as well as the Synthesizers.com systems and I like the way that the
systems look when mounted in the huge cabinets. I am wondering
though, what are the silver "dividers" that separate the modules
from eachother vertically? I can't find anything that shows a close
up of these things. Can anyone help me out? I would like to do
this to my system. Thanks in advance.

I believe them to part of the panel itself. A moog panel is a very shallow
"U" shape, of aluminium, with a black face printed down the center.

The silver part is just an unpainted section of the panel. The panels have
side edges that are bent at a 90 degree angle and help to stiffen the panel.

Go to the Moog Archives site and click on modules to see some examples.

Rob, They are part of the panel. The panels curve to the back at the
edges to give the panel strength since they are not thick like the
MOTM panels. The paint (or anodizing I think in the case of Moog
panels) does not extend to cover the entire panels. You see the
aluminum of the unpaited portion

You can also look in the "jeff brown" folder in the Photos section,
or go to the bottom of the page at
<http://www.guitarfool.com/modular.html>
and click on the module pictures. There's some pictures of unmounted
panels from various angles.

It's the corner notching on the panels (for mounting purposes) that
makes them look like there's something different going on between
the panels.

The bends in the sheet metal make for a very rigid panel with very
little weight. This can be a significant factor in a large modular!

Thanks for the info. That makes sense. Has anyone actually tried
replicating Moog style panels? What type of machine would you use
to form the panels? Would it be a press of some sort? Sorry if
these are dumb questions, but I'm not adept when it comes to metal
work beyond the scope of drilling and engraving. By the way, where
are you guys getting blank MOTM size panels? For my next project, I
am going to be abandoning the Frac Rack in favor of something where
I can spread out the knobs a bit for a more ergonomic synth. --- In

I'm buying them from Roger. I cannot make them much cheaper.

Many people buy them from me. I offer them blank aluminum and also
with the identical paint finish as MOTM modules, in 1U, 2U and 3U
width. And, I can do custom sizes too.

That's always been my preference.

Larry,

What is the pricing for "blank aluminum [MOTM panels] and also with the
identical paint finish as MOTM modules, in 1U, 2U and 3U width." I couldn't
seem to find it on your website.

Thanks, Barry

Re: Panel question

2004-12-30 by Larry Hendry

Barry, I do not advertise them since I do not stock them.

Unpainted:
1U=$3, 2U=$4, 3u=$5

With MOTM paint
1U=$10, 2U=$16, 3U=$20

I do have a limited stock at the moment of 1U and 3U painted.
Larry
