CGS and dot com formats etc

CGS and dot com formats etc

2005-03-22 by bambam4236

HI All

I finally have started building a dot com modular and have just
received my first parts. i had a few questions for some of you that
may have put CGS modules into this format. I have ordered 2 blank
double width panels from .com and plan on using them to begin with
for a steiner filter and then a 6 in 1 bandpass filter. I was
wondering if any of you had used the Lazertran paper and Quick Laser
that i have read about here for printing the legends and how you
found it to use? or if you knwo a better option? im not swimming in
cash but would like some of my cgs modules to have the .com look so
getting a company to do one at a time would be expensive....others
will be getting more interesting finishes so i dont have a heap to
do in this format.

Also i was wondering do you just use metal posts and screw through
the front of the panel to mount your cgs boards? (ok i know things
liek the bandpass is pot mounted but the steiner etc isn't)
The only other thing i wanted to ask about is power connections, as
part of my .com i have a nice big PS here now and am thinking one of
these http://www.synthtech.com/motma.html from MOTM is the best
answer....as far as i can tell CGS all have the same connectors as
MOTM?

i've serached the messages to find some of my answers but hope im
not rehashing all of this.

thanks
Brett

Most CGS boards have a MOTM style connector with the same power pinout so
they can be mixed into MOTM systems without needing any modification. Some
have an arrangement that will allow either a modcan connector or a MOTM
connector to be used. In these cases, just put in the MOTM socket, and you
will be fine.

I've started using glue. Obviously you can't use just any glue; I use
slow-cure epoxy made specifically for gluing metals. The stuff is really
strong once it dries. I think you could just glue threaded posts end-on to
the backs of panels, which is probably how I'll do my next module (a combo
of a CGS Digital Noise and a custom sample & hold). The first time I tried
this technique I glued L-shaped brackets to the back of the panel, and glued
threaded standoffs to those. You can find photos at my website,
http://www.studionebula.com (look for the article entitled "Breakout Panel
for the Encore Expressionist" on the front page).

HI ken

I thought as much and dug a bit more and found exactly that ;) i think the
easiest solution is to buy one of those motm distribution boards and wire it
to the big PS i got from dot com, that way your modules should fit well into
the system ;)

See attached panel. However, I believe the PCB has changed since I
did these.

I use my own Stooge brackets for mounting PCBs. brackets are help to
the panel by the pots. PCBs screw to the brackets using machine
screws, nuts and stand off spacers
