steiner filter supercharger?

steiner filter supercharger?

2005-11-13 by betweenpie

Well, my first attempt a +/-15 device - a Steiner filter - isn't going
so well. Seems the frequency and res controls have little or no
effect, depending on which input is being used. I will keep tweaking,
however. I'm quite new to this, although I've built a number of
successful 9V devices.

The filter does seem to work in the sense that each input is indeed
filtering hi, band and low, which leads me to my real point - you can
supercharge the simultaneous input effect by running wires between the
various diodes and the 2n2 caps in addition to the regular inputs. The
effect can be quite mellow or severe. Not a profound discovery - these
are just wee feedback loops afterall - but it can make grainy, woody
or distorted effects depending on the combo. Super nice with white noise.

Substituting a germanium PNP adds something as well.

I could of course have things really more messed up than they appear,
and so maybe this wouldn't work on a fully functioning Steiner. In
case this is the case I think I may wire this version up with the taps
brought to the panel in a little patchbay allowing connections from
each diode and 2n2 juncture...and start a new Steiner from scratch.

If you look through the archives of this mailing list, or (more simply) look
at the comments by John Loffink at the end of the page on Ken's CGS site
about this filter, you'll see that some people have found that the frequency
control has too much effect rather than too little. That suggests to me that
something is wrong with your filter.

I started with John's modifications but ended up adding a new op-amp-based
CV mixer to get this filter to work to my liking.

Yes, something is certainly fishy with my filter, so I went ahead and
ordered the kit from Elby out of d.i.y. desperation. Thanks, I will look
through the archive...
