cgs bpf: dual 100k linear pots

2007-05-03 by Jason Proctor

so i have some CGS bandpass filters on the way and i'm having some
trouble sourcing the dual 100k linear pots. i'm a snob for components
and so i'm preferring the bourns 91a2a-b28b20. unfortunately mouser
don't stock them (and there's a 50 piece minimum order). americaii
have them at $5 each but there's a minimum $250 order charge.

is there a good alternative? or if there is enough interest maybe we
could get a group buy together (yeah, right)

(using two single pots is another alternative, but that makes a 2U
panel a 3U panel and i'd rather not go there...)

I have used the Piher dual 100K carbon potentiometers for my projects.
They have a smaller (7mm) mounting hole and have worked reasonably
well. They are not the quality of the Bourns but I haven't found any
other available dual controls that I like better.

Mouser 531-PC16DC-100K

Unless things have changed, Piher pots have remarkably short
lives.

The latest example : I have a Rocktron EQ3 parametric equaliser
here with scratchy pots. It has seven pots, four Pihers and three
of another brand. All four Pihers are so scratchy as to make the
EQ unusable. The three others are all fine...

thanks - those look like the only half decent option at the moment.

is that really a 7mm mounting hole?

I used the Piher dual pot in the CGS Bi n Tic filter. They are not that
great. They work fine but I didnt like the way they felt. They had a clunky
plastic feel to them, but if all you need is one of those dual pots it will
work fine.

IMHO the Alpha pots that Futurlec sell have a far better feel to them
than Piher pots. I've used Piher on all my early modules and although
none of them have failed, they just don't feel very nice. These Alpha pots
have a far smoother action. Futurlec sells both lin and log 100k duals.
