Does anyone know if a MPF102 JFET will work in place of the 2n4856?

It will sort-off work, but it's not a very good choice. The MPF102 is a
small
signal amp, not really a switch.
According to Ian Fritz on the electro-music forum, the best FET for this
type of VCO currently in production is the PN4391.

I agree. I've used the PN4391 as a substitute in the VCO, Bi'N'Tic
Filter (quite a few), and other VCOs, and have never had a problem w/
it.

I have moved the MPF102 and the J112 off of my basic shop stock list. I now keep 4391 and
the BF245 around as basic jfet trans.
