Is there a rpoblem with using the series A 4006 in the Digital Noise
circuit? My breadboard proto isn't making noise, but rather it's
halving the output frequency of the VCO.

I've never tried an A series (unbuffered) in there, though I don't see why
it shouldn't work. Possible problems 1) MC4006 - it isn't a 4006! you'd want
MC14006. 2) wiring error. 3) timing issues between the chosen chips.

I came across the message below in the list archives. Was this ever
resolved? I'm having the exact same problem with my CD4006AE's and I
am using the CGS PCB. Moreover, I have breadboarded the Transcendent
noise source with these chips earlier and that also had the VCO at the
output.

Or, does anyone have a working digital noise with an A-series 4006?

For what it's worth, the original design I referred to when designing this
specified the SCL4006AE. So apparently an A series should work. Note: SCL
chips by SSS (Solid State Scientific) were deemed to be disasters by
industry many years back.

Suggestions
#1. Increase the 10k pulldown on pin 3 of the 4006 to 100k.
#2. Increase the 33k, 18k divider to 100k, 47k.
#3. Try a 4070 instead of a 4030.
#4. An AE series chip is very prone to static damage, and is no doubt OLD.

They're from RCA, which makes them at least 20 years old I guess.

Thanks for your suggestions, I'll give them a try.
I'll also try and get some other 4006's.

By the way, I got these AE's from eBay about six months
back and they were shipped to me without any static
protection so they might well be dead.

I've got three 4006's left - all tested. Let me know if you want one
and I'll send it free.

I've got to find another cheap source of those!

Hey Charles,

Last time I got some 4006's, I got them from ABRA Electronics:

http://www.abra-electronics.com/driver/database.php?search=4006

I've only ordered once from them, but I really like them. If the order is
over $50, they include free a groovy little DMM with the order. Didn't know
that til I got it - I thought was pretty cool. Took about a week and half
to fill the order and get it from New York to Kansas.

Cheers,
Scott

Holy Cow! Only 35 cents apiece!!! How did I miss this?

Fine business, Scott! I've sent the last of the 4006's off, so it
would do well for those of you just thinking about the digital noise
module to dig into this source.

I'm going to check out what else they've got!

But... "Minimum order for foreign orders is $75.00".
So I'm still looking...

I've been told on the sdiy list that the NTE ones work
as well, but those seem to be sold only by Mouser which,
also, isn't kind on foreign orders ($45 shipping).

I'll sell some for $2 each. And I ship internationally. For cheep. :-)

...and so they proved to be. I got a couple of 4006BE now which
are all fine.
