Inf Mel output pots

Inf Mel output pots

2009-03-29 by w1xyzq

Most of the photos of infinite melodies show them built w/out output pots.
Would you suggest using them or not? My VCO's do not have attenuated inputs (for 1v/o). The rest of my modules w/ CV in are a mix of having pots on the inputs. I do have a bank of 4 attenuators for patching in when needed.

I'm sure this is very subjective, but is adjusting the output level of the infinite melody something that i might want to do often?

I frequently patch the three D/A outputs of the Infinite Melody directly
to 1V/octave inputs of VCOs. The voltage range of these outputs depends
on the bit disable switches for bits 4 and 5. And if you need to
attenuate the CV, every VCO has attenuated FM inputs.

There is a common design principle in modular synthesis to use
attenuation mainly on inputs, not on outputs. There are several reasons
for this. Properly attenuating an output requires an additional op amp
to buffer the signal post-attenuation to maintain a low output impedance
and the capability of driving multiple inputs. In other words, active
attenuation. If you put a simple pot on the panel between a module
output and the jack, this would be passive attenuation. (Is your bank
of 4 attenuators passive? You probably patch them to non-attenuated
inputs on modules. They're perfect for that.) Another reason is that
by attenuating at inputs, each input can set a different level from one
output signal, whereas attenuating the output sends the same level to
all modules.
