in the wave multiplier's middle section between the ic's are several 100n
capacitors. is it possible to use another value for these? i don't have any
100n's laying around..

Those are power supply decoupling for the ICs. 0.047 (47n) would be okay, or
0.12 (120n) or anything in between.
