CGS79 Serge Ring Mod

CGS79 Serge Ring Mod

2016-01-17 by Boris Klompus

Hello,

Does any one have experience with this module? I'm curious about the differences in the audio inputs and the voltage control inputs.

Can anyone that has both this module and a different ring mod, for instance CGS67 notice any practical differences? I assume those VC inputs should have some change in application and control.

Thank you!
Boris

I have one.

Also a CGS67 in my Quantisise Blue panel.

Also a couple of MOTM-190

The Mattson VCA contains a ring mod input in addition to the signal input.

All of these are interesting and sound slightly different from each other. As to the CV inputs on the Serge Ring Mod, they are DC-coupled inputs, inverted in phase from the corresponding signal inputs. They basically impart offsets, which allows you to sweep the effect.

The 'practical' differences would seem to be the inputs, outputs, and controls. VC Y and Input X (or VC X and Input Y) on the Serge correspond to the Carrier AC and DC inputs on the Active Real Ring Mod. The Unbalance pot is similar on both. The MOTM-190 has a Blend pot that is essentially a wet/dry balance of modulated signal and the input. Mattson's is pretty cool in that it cascades a VCA with a ring mod, so you can do both level and modulation, with two difference control voltages. I like the sound of the Mattson best. But all ring modulators work in the same way.

Thanks Richard!

I'll check out the others as well. The Mattson looks interesting, wish it was a bare board though.

The CGS79 has my attention because of the sweeping. I'll give this one a try I think.

I like the sound of the ring mod in the TTSH a lot, and the schematics look some what similar.

Well Boris I am building one now but don't have all the parts on hand yet, nor CGS67. I can compare it to my vintage ring mod I built from electronotes way back though, when I am done. Ask again in a few weeks.

Cheers

Gord
