Mounting PCBs to Panels

Mounting PCBs to Panels

2001-09-29 by ltroth@socal.rr.com

Hello all

I've seen a number of great looking front panels on many of the
Synth-DIY pages. The best have no visible screws from mounting the
PCBs to the panels. How Do They Do That? I'm looking for
suggestions. While I do not have Ken's artistic talent, I would like
to make my panels clean looking.

One way is to use the pots themselves to secure a bracket or sub-panel to
the front panel. If you plan to use some sort of covering material on the
panel, countersunk bolts are also an option.

That usually means that a screw is cast onto the back of the panel. That's how MOTM panels are done. Personally, I don't think it harms the look of the panel to have screws visible, but that's me.

I don't like the idea of using pots to hold the PCB to the panel. If you move the modular around, for gigs or whatever, enough jarring can cause solder joints to break. Repaired many amps where this was the case.

Re: Mounting PCBs to Panels

I think you mis-usnderstand how I mean. Certainly, the pot itself should not
be bearing any weight on its contacts.

What I mean is that you create a bracket which you anchor to the front panel
by passing the threaded section of the pot through it, so that when you
tighten up the pot nut, the bracket is securely held between the pot body
and the front panel. Tou then mount your circuit board on this bracket. The
pots I use are not PCB mounted anyway, so there is no stress placed on the
pot connections at all.

I've done this on the Five band Equalizer and the MOTM100 modules. You can
clearly see the brackets in the photo. In the case of the MOTM100, the
brackets extend to the full width of the PCB supporting it very well.
Admittedly the attachment point on the eq is a little weak.

If you go here

http://24.12.85.234/larry/

there should be some useful cabinet hardware. I got a bunch of MOTM
style brackets (not the same) that secure to the panel and are punched
to match 3 pots that secure to the bracket and the panel. it is heavy
but it is a great solution to mounting pcbs and the first 3 pots. They
match up well with Oakley / Shaeffer panels and I have this pending on
my Shaeffer dual Psycho lfo panel.

You're right, I did mis-understand. That sounds like the third party
(Larry Hendry?) MOTM mounting brackets, which are a good way to go.
