web use when building modules

web use when building modules

2004-02-03 by sasami@hotkey.net.au

Hi all,

I am wondering what web usage there is when people are building CGS modules.
For example, do you save the files locally to your machine, or do you log on
to get the details each time you are building?

I have been considering adding zip files of each module so they can be
downloaded and viewed locally/kept as a reference. Would this help?

Cheers,

Ken

Yes, I think it would be a good idea. PDFs are ideal IMHO.
Personlly, I have been cuttting and pasting into a Word document so I
could have something to save and print. So, I support this. :) If
you do not have PDF file writing capability, I woudl be happy to do
the PDF file conversion from something you put together.

I think a PDF format is also ideal. For my CGS projects I usually copy
all the text on the specific projects page and then download all the
relevant jpegs. After that I "reconstruct" the page in Word so I can print
it. It's a little tedious, so a prepackaged solution would be wonderful!

Great idea. PDF's would be ideal.

Personally, .pdf's would be helpful.

I must be in the simple-minded minority - I just print the module's
documentation straight from my web browser, in glorious color. If I want
a larger picture of, say, a pcb, I just save the image and print it. My
computer is 'far away' from where I build and produce analogue noise (this
is by design), so viewing the computer while building is not an option for me.

But, Ken if you go with .pdf's, I can easily use them.

I typically reload the project page without frames, save it with IE and then
print it out. PDF format would appeal to me.

I'd say that both zip files and pdf's are ok.

PDF would be great, as somebody pointed out, I printed like him the
webpages and it's not the best.

Now a little practical detail : choose a format of document that can be
easily printed both in A4 and US letter, not everyone is in the USA ;)
it'll save troubles to people out there.

Thanks for future work to be put in this.

I usually print out the info when I go to build a module... no room on the
workbench for a computer, anyway.

sometimes this means printing the page at reduced size, or opening the
schematic image in a new window to print... i liked how you have the VCO
full-size schemo as a separate linked doc, it helped in the printing.

Personally, I'd rather see a single format of documentation in whatever
format is easiest for you to maintain... again, as on the VCO page where you
were able to update quickly w/ the rev .02 corrections. Having web and PDF
versions, things would get out of synch, or minor emends would get harder to
make... one of my frustrations w/ E4M, for instance, is the sometimes
out-of-date documentation.

would rather you spent your time working on the next cool module, rather
than futzing w/ multiple copies of manuals!

I save the webpage and print it out when I'm about to work on that
particular module. When a page is updated you could just send a
message to the group informing us of the change. Less time spent on
paper work means more time to build modules. I'm all for that. :-)

Re: web use when building modules

2004-02-04 by Richard Brewster

I'm simple minded about this too. I print the web pages out and put
them into a 3-ring binder for reference when building. Nice hardcopy.
I am less interested in a tidy print format than in having the
information at hand. If PDFs are available I often save them to disk,
but I print them out as well.

I save the webpage to disk and copy/paste what I need to .doc and
print/view from there. I have no problem with my/the current method
(It's modular-like.)
IMSO, I think a wiser use of CGS time would be spent on circuit
design - :) Of course an updated-page post would be nice.

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
