Polaris Not Working At All

Polaris Not Working At All

2005-03-23 by colmaouno

Hi all,
Recently acquired a Polaris. To my dismay when I switched it on, not working! The LEDs
light up (dont blink just light up) and when I turn it off and on again different LEDs light
up, sometimes many, sometimes few. Nothing seems to respond, not even midi. Very
strange. I read somewhere this could be a problem with the power supply being dirty, or
a much more serious problem with the unit. Please help.

An angry shopper,
Marco

If the batteries died, it might need a full recalibration or
something...I'm no expert on the CP, but I've read that all the
settings can be lost if the batteries die, and that recalibrating isnt
really fun. In any case, ifyou can get your money back, it might be
worth it, but if your a true synth lover, do know that the CP is well
worth it if you can find a replacement or a way to fix it.

Probably a power issue / power-up glitching. You could try adjusting
the "DC OK" control (see http://www.rhodeschroma.com/?id=polaris for
documentation). You can also try some rapid power cycling NASA-style
to see if you can get it to "boot up" correctly and verify the rest
of the synth.

You might want to measure the power supplies in the unit but be
careful, if you blow the DAC you are in trouble! It would be better
to just return the synth.

Marco - I agree with Ben's recent post on this topic. The most common reason
for the sort of behaviour noted is if something is a little bit awry with the
power supply. The "DC OK" control is definitely one of the items that I would
look at first.

The Polaris is a very servicable keyboard - so if you (or a friend) is
electronically inclined it can almost certainly be fixed.

That being said, they are up for sale quite regularly, so if it is a low/no
effort task to return it - that might be the best way to go (and then pick up
another one at a later date).
