Hi Aaron, The Brass button doesn't have to be on! By pressing one/both of the Strings buttons you should here the string sound. Which output do you use? Perhaps you accidentally used the seperate Brass output. Do the LEDs (of the Stringsbuttons) light up when you push them? This could be an indicitation the buttons don't work. The last option (is a stupid one, but just checking): Did you set the volume of the Strings section?
