Crumar Performer Question

Crumar Performer Question

2004-12-27 by aaron_peters

This might be dumb question, but does the Brass button have to be on
as well as one of the String buttons to get any string sounds out of
the Performer? Just pick up a used Performer and I don't think my
string section is working...

Aaron

Hi Aaron,

The Brass button doesn't have to be on! By pressing one/both of the Strings buttons you should here the string sound.
Which output do you use? Perhaps you accidentally used the seperate Brass output.
Do the LEDs (of the Stringsbuttons) light up when you push them? This could be an indicitation the buttons don't work.
The last option (is a stupid one, but just checking): Did you set the volume of the Strings section?

Cheers,

Ridzert

Re: Crumar Performer Question

Hi Ridzert,

I'm using the Main output and the both Strings LEDs light up. The
Strings volume is also turned up--no difference from the Brass
setting--also seems like the EQ switches don't do anything. Thanks
for the confirmation. Looks like I need to take it to the shop.

Can anyone suggest a repair shop in the San Francisco Bay Area?

Aaron

For me it seems that the Top Octave Generator (TDA1007 or SAA50240) is
defect. There are replacement parts for such Chips, but they cost much
money.

RE: [crumar] Re: Crumar Performer Question

2004-12-27 by Margus Kliimask

Hmm... From "and I don't think my string section is working..." I would
assume that the brass section IS working which would rule out the MK50240
(then all notes would be dead). Concerning TDA1008 there's one per voice so
if one of them were dead you would lose just one note out of 12. As for
availability, TDA1008 is pretty easily available costing <$10.

So if the brass section is working the critical stuff (SSM 2040 and SSM 2050
in the later versions) are OK, the string section is just a bunch of 1458
and 741 opamps.

"also seems like the EQ switches don't do anything" - they shouldn't. EQ
only applies to string section.

Best regards,
Margus

Doesn\ufffdt have the Perfomer a separate VCO for Brass? Ok, my Multiman had
(afaik, i\ufffdve trashed it one Year ago, i\ufffdm sorry for the wrong
Chip-Manufacturers/Types) -only- a TDA1008 and a replacement part (even
the 1008 was defect) would have cost more than 40 Euro here. I currently
own a Siel Cruise and it has a separate (VCO?) for the Mono-Section and
a MK50240 for the Poly-Section. The Poly-Section also didn\ufffdt made any
sound, only a quiet opamp-1shot- noise while pressing a key, but that
wasn\ufffdt a Malfunction of the 50240; there was a 4066 nearly the TOG which
was defect....

RE: [crumar] Re: Crumar Performer Question

2004-12-28 by Margus Kliimask

Nope. Performer does not have a VCO at all - 50240 is TOS, and TOS and VCO are kind of mutually exclusive :) Anyway, both the string and brass sections are feeded by the same TOS/dividers, there's no voltage control there.
BTW, I bought a couple of TDA1008-s for my (then defunct) Performer last year for ab 6 Euros apiece from Finland. 50240 is a completely different story, I am not aware of any source for those.
