Performer adjustment

2003-04-21 by gojko_mitic

Hi,

I'm new to this group - just acquired a defective Performer a week
ago, found a broken divider chip, fixed a defective connection etc.
Some questions to this great community:

1. I have ordered a copy of service manual for Performer. However,
this only contains schematics and part list as far as I know. Is
there an 'adjustment procedures' type of doc existing somewhere (like
I have for Polysix or Juno106)? Can anyone share this info? A 'user
manual' could also be useful if that exists.

2. Does anyone have an idea how the Performer sound samples at Mod
Archive (http://www.modarchive.com/waveworld/soundstate.shtml) are
created? Are they really dry Crumer sounds or have gone through
external processing? Some of these seem to be stereo sounds which
should not be possible with Performer... Anyway, I am worried as I
can't get all of these sounds out of mine :)

3. What kind of cap or knob fits on the tuning pot on the rear side?
My Performer came without any and the pictures I found on the net are
too dim to figure it out.

4. Anyone has a source for front panel faders? For TDA1008? Data
sheet for TDA1008?

Sorry for the long postings and so many questions. Best regards,

Margus

Margus, I've downloaded all of the sounds from above and I'm pretty
sure that most, if not all, of the samples you're talking about use
the Performer as their source. HOWEVER, as intimated by the preface
to these samples, they have been heavily modified by the use of
external resonating filters, phase shifters, delay and reverb. It's
safe to say that 85% of the sound you're hearing in these samples is
caused by the external filter they've been run through. Some of them
sound so early Tangerine Dream-ish that I'd bet they were run through
Moog filter banks.

Great sounds . . . but not typically Performer. For one thing, almost
no use of the Performer's filter bank is used . . . well, it's
actually labled EQ Control on the Performer but still . . . whoever
made the samples was more interested in transforming the Performer
into something other than what it was, and not representing what the
instrument is really good at.

Sounds like I'm a purist, doesn't it? Not really. I like these
samples. But I wouldn't post them as "Crumar Performer". It would
have been more acurate to have posted them as "String Pads"
or "Filter Sweeped Strings" or something like that because they are
mainly effects.

Thanks. That was the conclusion I reached myself, but only after getting the schematics, going through every single sheet and assuring myself that this machine simply does not have enough electronics inside to produce these sounds by itself :) I'm a bit puzzled by the fact that most of the sounds were created to show off the brass section while usually this is considered, well, useless and most people seem to ;like the strings part.
Best regards,
Margus
BTW. Sorry it took so long to reply - your message got deleted by my spam filter without catching my attention first because of 'Samples' in the subject line :)
