My LCD would not have any HW controls but only a SW-based control
panel. Do I understand correctly that for the profiling process this
does not matter? You have to adjust manually via the SW controls.

If the "hardware controls" on your monitor are run from on screen menus, or from the Apple Control Panel, in the case of Apple LCD brightness (which is really backlight) control, then that is where you would adjust it. They are referred to as "hardware controls" because they directly control the hardware, not because they are physical controls, necessarily, themselves. Other types of controls might, for example, make adjustments at the video card level, which would not be considered hardware controls.
