As far as front panel controls, are you referring to 10 or more bits
internal LUTs LCD monitors? Or 8 bit LCD monitors as well?

The type of DDC control I'm describing would be general to any DDC compliant monitor (meaning compliant for two way communication, one way communication doesn't help). Specific support of proprietary monitor internal tables is a seperate, and very fussy, thing.

I'm sure it will prove to be broadbased enough in the near future and
Colorvision is definitely in the position to take advantage of it.

Again, this type of global DDC support does not offer increased features for a monitor, only increased convenience, in that users don't have to fiddle with brightness, contrast, and RGB gain controls. Given that few monitors offer RGB gains these days, this largely comes down to automating the brightness and contrast settings. Handy, but not life-altering.

Hi David

My LCD would not have any HW controls but only a SW-based control
panel. Do I understand correctly that for the profiling process this
does not matter? You have to adjust manually via the SW controls.

If the "hardware controls" on your monitor are run from on screen menus, or from the Apple Control Panel, in the case of Apple LCD brightness (which is really backlight) control, then that is where you would adjust it. They are referred to as "hardware controls" because they directly control the hardware, not because they are physical controls, necessarily, themselves. Other types of controls might, for example, make adjustments at the video card level, which would not be considered hardware controls.
