PrintFIX Pro Profile needed brightness adjustment - how to get right 1st time?

2007-07-22 by davelasker

I just got PrintFIX Pro and created my first profile.

I am using version 2.1 of the software as downloaded from
Colorvision's web site.

This profile was for Epson Premium Glossy Paper printed on a HP B9180
with paper setting for HP Advanced Photo Glossy (that got the best
results with the Media Settings Check image). I built my profile
using the High Quality 225 patch and Extended Grays targets.

The resulting profile is too dark, as seen in both the soft proof and
printed results. There is a bit of ink pooling in the dark browns.

I experimented with the brightness slider, and found that an
adjustment of +2 gave me the good results. This makes the monitor
display about the same brightness with soft proofing turned both on
and off. And the prints look great too!

So my questions are:

1) Why was the initial profile too dark?
2) Is this likely to happen with other papers as well?
3) Is there any mistake I might have made that would cause this?
4) Would using the Expert target have helped?
4) Is there anything I can do make my initial profiles come out
better without the need for tweaking the brightness?

Thanks for the help!

Dave
