Why does PFP Paper White/Monitor Black change CS2 Gamut Warning?

2007-08-26 by davelasker

I am just getting started with PrintFIX PRO. I am using V2.1 of the
software on Windows XP SP2.

I made 2 profiles for Hahnemuhle Photo Rag on my HP B9180.

The 1st profile had all Build Profile Setup adjustments set to
default values.

The 2nd profile was made from same scan of the same targets, but I
checked the boxes for Ref White/Paper White Compensation and Ref
Black/Monitor Black Compenation.

This changed Ref White from 94/0/-1 to 94/0/0, and Ref Black from
14/0/0 to 10/0/0.

My reading of the help file is that both of these profiles should
print the same; only the soft proof should be different.

Next, I use PS CS2 Proof Setup, with Gamut Warning turned on, to
display an image with some out-of-gamut colors.

I set the PS info pallette to display "Proof Colors", and the same
RGB values are displayed for both profiles (as expected).

But something weird is happening with the CS2 out-of-gamut warning:

I start with the 1st profile (default settings) and I see some areas
are greyed out by the gamut warning. Then I switch to the 2nd profile
(Paper White/Monitor Black). The image gets darker (as expected since
the black luminosity was decreased). But what surprised be is that
the Gamut warning display "shrinks", i.e. areas that were out of
gamut with the 1st profile are displayed as in gamut with the 2nd. If
print output isn't affected by the Ref B/W settings, how can this be?

The out-of-gamut areas are dark brown. In pixels that display the
gamut warning, the "Proof Colors" blue level is zero. This is the
case with both profiles. So I think that the default profile is
displaying gamut warnings correctly, and the Ref White/Black profile
is displaying them incorrectly.

Can anyone explain what is going on here? Can I trust the CS2 Gamut
Warning with a PFP profile?

Thanks for the help!

Dave
