Would the ambient light correction feature of the new Spyder2PRO
mitigate that issue?

It would assure that you are using appropriate monitor luminance and monitor whitepoint for your ambient light... but it won't (and shouldn't) match your monitor to metameric prints... what would happen then to well mannered prints?

I cheat and view my prints under a Lowel EGO. Its a lot less
expensive than some of the dedicated viewing stations for sure.

Nothing wrong with Ott-Lite or other such bulbs for general proofing; what matters is that your proofing light is bright enough to relate to your monitor... an old prepress box intended to use with a CRT at 80 candela is not going to be bright enough to match against an LCD at 200 candela... and you'll end up complaining that your prints are too dark; when its your proofing light thats actually "too dark"...
