Hello Jack, I simply shine a fashlight beam across the page onto the spot I'm reading. The total nose area is larger than the portion which actually reads the color values. I was concerned, as you are, about reading more than the square and including some of the white borders. Unless you straddle two squares, the instrument is very accurate.
