One question though. I am assuming (a dangerous thing) that I should
leave the Spyder3Elite connected to my main photoprocessing computer
so that it can monitor ambient conditions. For the other two
machines, I am guessing that if the ambient conditions are stable and
remain the same as during calibration that the colorimeter not being
connected will not be an issue. Is this correct?

Yes, the ambient light function has several purposes. The first is to educate users about their ambient light conditions (many people simply don't realize that typical US office lighting is way too bright for color managed work, or conversely, that the cave they always worked in with CRTs is not appropriate any more with brighter LCDs). Beyond that, its to assist in getting the right balance of ambient light and display white luminance. Both those things can be done without continuing ambient light checks. The items where that comes in handy are educating people about how variable their conditions are (in order to convince people they should be working under consistant conditions, its necessary to show them how inconsistant their conditions are), and finally to be the canary in the coal mine, and warn you when your conditions have changed significantly. One or two canaries can serve this purpose for the whole coal mine, so leaving the Spyder3 connected to your main machine should really cover this for all machines in a given studio, unless one of them is off in a corner, near a window, where the light is less controlled, etc... on the other machines the S3 icon will simply have a slash through it, indicating no Spyder connected, and ongoing monitoring will not occur on those machines.
