It is definately a counterweight. It really doesn't snap in anywhere, but you merely press the center of the counterweight (at least on my 2 version of it) and drape it over the back of the monitor in the case of an lcd or the top I suppose of a crt. Make sure you position the calibration unit as squarely as possible over the target Colorvision provides. I generally calibrate my monitor around 4 in the morning with all ambient lights out. Makes for a bit of a go trying to find the menu on the lcd to adjust but it seems to work better for me.
