Wow, I think that qualifies as "over-thinking" the situation. ;-) Our research has shown that at least 99% of LCD displays that offer a contrast control, cannot actually control what "contrast" controlled in a CRT; that it to say you can't adjust white level using that control. So we stopped offering that step for LCDs in more recent builds, since it was not accomplishing our goal, and was one more hoop for people to jump through. Besides, in attempting to adjust white levels with the 'mock contrast control' on LCDs, it was possible to leave the display in a less optimal state in other ways. The more global situation here is that old-time CRT users still want to be able to adjust the timing and and set the point gap, oops, I mean adjust the RGB Gains and set the White Level, and are frustrated that LCD calibration is less about calibration and more about profiling, since there is so much less for them to do under the hood, so to speak.
