This will, if used in moderation, bring tones lost in the depths back to where they can be seen. If used to excess, it could cause a reversal at the 3/4 tones that would reduce shadow detail. And if your idea of shadow detail is different than lightening very dark areas, than you may not get the effect you expect from this tool. But the positive direction will lighten near blacks. This may actually, in the process, reduce the distinction of other tones nearer the 3/4 mark (there is no free lunch, if you increase distinction in one place, it has to be reduced somewhere else). If you wish to avoid a backup at the 3/4 tones, use a global adjustment to the brightness control, or a Photoshop curve of your own making instead of the shadow detail control. C.
