Spyder3Print 4.0.1 Shadow Detail Control does not work

Spyder3Print 4.0.1 Shadow Detail Control does not work

2009-10-30 by prof_mgt551

I increase the Shadow Detail Control from 0 to a higher numbers: 5 and 12 and create new profiles. I then use these new profiles in Photoshop to print a test target. Comparing the printout to the first profile that used a Shadow Detail setting of zero, 5 gives less shadow detail and 12 even less shadow detail in the printouts on an Epson 7900 printer, the opposite of what is suppose to happen. Spyder3Print is installed on a Windows Vista machine.

Any suggestions? I will try setting the control to a negative setting and see what this does?

nix this, I think I spoke too early. After allowing the Museo Portfolio Rag prints to dry for another 15 to 20 minutes, they do show more shadow detail. Sorry I wasn't a little more patient :0)

The shadow detail control makes a localized lightening of the dark
tones. This will, if used in moderation, bring tones lost in the
depths back to where they can be seen. If used to excess, it could
cause a reversal at the 3/4 tones that would reduce shadow detail. And
if your idea of shadow detail is different than lightening very dark
areas, than you may not get the effect you expect from this tool. But
the positive direction will lighten near blacks. This may actually, in
the process, reduce the distinction of other tones nearer the 3/4 mark
(there is no free lunch, if you increase distinction in one place, it
has to be reduced somewhere else). If you wish to avoid a backup at
the 3/4 tones, use a global adjustment to the brightness control, or a
Photoshop curve of your own making instead of the shadow detail control.

Hi David,

Pls excuse my ignorance but what's a "3/4 tone"?

Thanks,

The tones half way between midtones, and blacks... similarly
quartertones are between midtones and highlights.
