That sounds to me like you're doing everything "right"! The target prints
are supposed to be dark, and when you measure them (particularly on matte paper),
the measurements are going to look exactly as you've described.

If you look at the video (I made it...:-), I'm doing a test on an Epson R800 on
glossy paper, if I recall correctly. Glossy target prints are also dark, but
don't look (or measure) as "muddily" as matte. That's really the only difference.

If you'd like me to check your measurements and give them an "OK", I'll be glad to.

to locate and email me a copy of your measurement file.

(So: "horrid" here is just in the untrained eye of the beholder...:-) Target prints
are uncalibrated and they "should" be like that. They're not supposed to look pretty...:-)
