Re: [datacolor_group] Ugly measurements from targets?

2010-07-31 by Wayne Barson

Thanks Dave. Yeh... they are untrained eyes! I just opened my new Spyder print 3
SR box three days ago.
After printing many test images (Supplied by Datacolor) with the new profile,
while tweaking the "Advanced Controls" I have managed to create a profile that
prints very very close to what I see on screen without having to make
adjustments in lightroom prior to printing proofs. That's all I asked for!

I have been printing high quality Card Stock which is smaller than letter sized
paper. The targets were too small even with minimized borders so I used
lightroom to crop and fill the entire card with the targets which then made it
easier to measure. As far as I know, I cannot do this with spyder Print3 SR and
a custom size paper.

I measured the targets printed through lightroom (no color management) and
Print3 SR. I got the same readings. Although I once used Photoshop custom
proofing exclusively to print all my images, I now prefer lightroom for the
simplicity and time saving. Final test prints were through lightroom and I was
ecstatic with the results!

Thanks again for your quick response to my newbie needs. looking forward to many
years of creating quality prints with my new system.

That sounds to me like you're doing everything "right"! The target prints
are supposed to be dark, and when you measure them (particularly on matte
paper),
the measurements are going to look exactly as you've described.

If you look at the video (I made it...:-), I'm doing a test on an Epson R800 on
glossy paper, if I recall correctly. Glossy target prints are also dark, but
don't look (or measure) as "muddily" as matte. That's really the only
difference.

If you'd like me to check your measurements and give them an "OK", I'll be glad
to.
Send an email to me directly at dmiller@... and I'll tell you how
to locate and email me a copy of your measurement file.

(So: "horrid" here is just in the untrained eye of the beholder...:-) Target
prints
are uncalibrated and they "should" be like that. They're not supposed to look
pretty...:-)
