Datacolor User to User Support Group.

Many thanks for your fast reply and the very positive position that both NEC
and you (Datacolor) are taking re the Spyder3 puck.

 

I have been very pleased with the Spyder3Elite results on my 6 year old
Samsung 930b monitor, but the Samsung monitor has gone beyond its use for my
work (other than that of being used to show the Photoshop control tools or
other non color critical work.)

Yes, we know Will, and have been communicating with him on the subject of
NECs opinions about calibrators. First off, I'll agree with him that a
Spyder2, now about five years outdated, is not a good choice for calibrating
a wide gamut LCD. Neither is a Display1, a Huey, or other older devices. 

Beyond that it gets trickier. Recent Spyder3s, when tested on the NEC and
similar wide gamut displays, do an excellent job; in fact our testing shows
them to be better than any other consumer colorimeter. The older testing
that NEC is basing their opinions on did not give the same results, so we
are encouraging them to do more updated testing. 

Another factor is that our testing is with our own software; NEC wants to
apply second level calibration functions for each type of colorimeter in
their software, so consistency within a device model over the entire model
lifetime is actually more important to that technique than individual device
accuracy. Spyder3s have been improved incrementally over time, so one set of
"corrections" for the entire model line will not offer consistent results
with different versions of different ages. 

So at the moment, I would have to recommend using Datacolor's software with
a recent Spyder3 as the colorimeter combination that will produce the most
accurate results. We will work with NEC to see what we can do to satisfy
their expectations, but at the moment the methodology in their software is
not a particularly good fit for our device.
