Adjust White Luminace with Monitor's Brightness or Contrast control?????

I have Dell Ultrasharp monitor.  When calibrating with spyder 3, I want to change the white luminance.  My monitor has controls for both Contrast and Brightness.  Which should I use to adjust the white luminance.
