On old fashioned displays (CRTs and some of the earliest LCDs) the black clipping was adjusted with the brightness control, and the white clipping was adjusted with the contrast control. It doesn't work that way on current LCDs. The brightness control now adjusts the backlight, and is used to set the display luminance.
