What is the contrast set to?
It might be too low. Increasing contrast also increases the brightness.
Careful. In CRTs the contrast control adjusted blacks. In LCDs it does something quite different; but not always the same thing from one make or model to another. The suggestion to return contrast to its default state and leave it alone is still the best choice for most recent LCD displays.
