all profiles have too much yellow

all profiles have too much yellow

2006-09-23 by bwinkjet

Hi all,

I need help.  I have profiled 2 different papers using PrintFIX PRO;
Lexjet Pro semimatt and Ilford Gallery Smooth Gloss using 225 patches
and 729 patches, all read three times (total of 12 readings). (has
taken several weeks) All profiles produce a nice print, except all
cause a yellow cast with a slight deficiency of red. My equipment:
Eizo monitor calibrated with Monaco Optix Pro, PC with XP pro, Epson
2200 (nozzle checks are good), Image print for comparison, Qimage
workflow, and direct printing from Photoshop. With soft proofing in
PS of a grey scale wedge I note a reduction of red and increased
yellow when using the profiles I created. (all) Using the same color
image printed with generic profiles there is no cast with Image
Print, Qimage, or direct from PS. However using the profiles I
created with PFP there is a persistant yellowing using any of the
profiles I have created. My workflow for color images is OK as the
generic profiles produce prints with good color balance. Also have
viewed prints in various lighting conditions, daylight to
incandescent and an Ott light. I can get a near neutral print using
PFP profiles by adding 10 to 15 units of Blue and 4 units of Red in
PS before printing. I wonder if the OBs in these 2 papers are
throwing the spectro off? I have spent a lot of time working on this
before posting in hopes I could solve the problem. But, now I need
help.

Thanks in advance,
Paul

Mail a 225 patch target, and a few blank sheets of the same paper, to another PFP owner. Have them build a profile from your target print, and email it to you. See if it gives the same results as yours. Then they can print a target on the same paper, build a profile, and print the test image through it, to see if they get a yellow cast. If they don't get a cast on their printer, its not the paper. If their profile works for you, the likely variable is your DC1005. If their own profile works fine for them, but the one that make for you doesn't then its likely somewhere in your system. I'd do this with you myself, but I'll be out of the country for the next couple of weeks. If no one volunteers, then contact Customerservice@..., and post a ticket with a copy of my instructions above in it, and "attn: Kiran" in the subject line, and Kiran will work on this with you.

Hi,
Thanks for your response. Have fun in Europe.
I will wait for a volunteer.
As a lark to test the OBA theory I calibrated the spectro on the
Lexmark paper instead of the stand. It caused the yellow to go away,
but caused some of the darker grays to posterize to yellows and blues.

Re: all profiles have too much yellow

Hello Paul and David,

I would volunteer Paul, to do the test, but I am experiencing
EXACTLY the same thing. I have to do this blue/red offset adjustment
before printing, otherwise the prints are mainly too yellow.

I was wondering when someone else might report being "afflicted"
with the same malady.

So anyway, I too am looking for a volunteer with PFP to send some
samples to as a comparison. Would be nice to have this resolved
before Version 2.0 comes out.

Thanks!

Regards,
Robert

Hi Robert,

In one way glad to have company and on the other hand it means there
may be a more pervasive problem. I am currently reprinting paper
targets and rereading in hopes there was an error somewhere in my
workflow.

I've had the same yellow cast (see
http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/colorvision_group/message/1278) and I
ended up adding blue during profile creation to offset it. However, I've
been testing MIS Pro inks in my 2200 lately and I was pleased to see that
this was no longer needed. I see that Paul also uses a 2200, so I'm
wondering if the issue isn't specific to Epson K2 inks and PrintFix Pro. MIS
Pro inks are a generation newer, and similar to K3 inks.

Re: all profiles have too much yellow

Hi Terry,

I am profiling papers and canvases from Epson 9600s and 7800s and
the problem is there on both. I've been printing with manufacturer
supplied profiles over the last few years without problems so I
don't think it's my workflow, although I will retrace my steps as
Paul is doing. With other projects needing more attention right now,
I may not get back to profiling for a couple of weeks. If anything
shows up then, I will update this post.

Terry,

Would you mind if I sent a 225 patch target (or two) for you to read
and create a profile from just to compare to my own? Again, I may
not get to this for a week or so. If you agree, please email me off-
line with address info.

Thanks,
Robert
