general work flow for out of gamut colors

general work flow for out of gamut colors

2006-10-23 by mamemarquees

Hi

I get a lot of images from people who don't really understand gamuts
and that some colors that are displayed on the screen just can't be
reproduced via the printer. The Blues in particular seem to be the
most troublesome going from blue to purple. I would prefer to not
adjust the image and let the profile get it to the closest blue it
can. There was a nice fellow (Xun) that was able to take the
reading from my Printfix Pro and adjust the profile using his x-rite
profile system to "tame the blue to purple" thing. Though Xun says
it is no trouble at all, I tend to play with my printers and inks
and media a lot and I hate to trouble him all the time.

I tried to adjust the profile myself using printfix pro, but the
changes I make tend to affect other colors that were fine before I
adjusted it, and there does not seem to be a way to only adjust the
blue colors that printfix pro deems out of gamut.

So my question is, is there a 3rd party profile editor that will let
me adjust things like Xun does, without draining the bank and
purchasing the full blown X-Rite system? Or am I just going about
this wrong.... and deal with the out of gamut image before I send it
to the printer.

Scott
