Hey here's an interesting thought ... not sure if its something worth
considering or not but let me throw it out here.

What would happen if after a profile was constructed the target was
re-printed with the profile applied.  Is it useful to iterate and
reduce the color error further or is that getting needlessly complex?

ICC profile building is not an iterative process; what you suggests makes a worse, not a better, profile. There are other ways to tune profiles that we are looking into, but building a second one, does not apply it on top of the first, so results are worse. Even software that has features designed to do this properly seldom actually improves results.

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
