DMax and Profiles

DMax and Profiles

2007-01-12 by tech4x5

I am using PrintFix Pro 2.0 and have been very happy with the
profiles it has made. When I view Epson Enhanced Matte and Moab
Entrada Natural prints, the prints are right on and have a full range
of tones. But when I look at Somerset Photo Enhanced Velvet(by Legion)
prints, they don't seem to pack as much punch. When I look at the
blacks in these prints, the black is clearly not as black. I measured
the DMax in the papers and it is in the 1.90 range with EEM and
Entrada, but is in the 1.60 range with the Somerset PE Velvet. These
measurements goes along with what I visually see.
Is it your experience that Somerset Photo Enhanced Velvet yields
lower DMax's, blacks that aren't as black, or cold I be doing something
wrong? Thanks.

Well, if you measure the black patch on your profiling target you should see these same numbers. That would prove its not a profiling issue (and there's really no way it will be a profiling issue). It could be a media setting issue, and you may want to use the media setting test print to try to find a setting with a darker black, without messing up shadow detail or other factors... Also be sure you are NOT checking Black Point Compensation, and that should cover it.
