PFP - first impressions

PFP - first impressions

2007-03-29 by Tim Mimpriss

I have now purchased PrintFix Pro to use in conjunction with my
DesignJet 30. The version supplied by the dealer was PFP 1, but I had
already downloaded v2 from ColorVision's website and the v1 unlock key
worked.

I then tested media settings and printed the simple target on Ilford's
Smooth Matte. I had been quite unable to get decent results using HP's
profile for this paper, but PFP produced an acceptable profile first
time around. And, what is more, correcting for the optical brightener
(paper white = Lab a-4) gave a soft proof which is reasonably close to
the print, something I have never seen with HP's profiles for HP media.

The measuring is much easier to perform than I had expected. It helps to
have good illumination and to realize that it is very easy to place the
sensor beyond the far edge of the patch. However, with regard to the
software, I did find the warning message every time I made a test print
somewhat tedious and would like to be able to turn this off.

The next stage will be to make profiles for my favorite matte papers.
