Quad monitors

Quad monitors

2007-11-16 by Randy Laskody

Hello, I need to run 4 monitors at once from one computer. If I build
a computer with a motherboard has dual video card slots I can install
two dual head cards and profile 2 of the 4 monitors (one on each card)
with win XP right? Thanks!

Surely somebody from Colorvision can answer this.

That is what I am thinking, but wanted to make sure. I ordered the
parts from newegg.com day before yesterday for a new athlon dual core
system workstation with an SLI dual video card motherboard.

I have a portrait studio and we sell from projection, and also layout
custom multi image products like large wall groupings, for customers
right at the sales session.

So I need a 21" CRT along with a seperate toolbar monitor, and we
where running a projector split off from the toolbar monitor with a
VGA splitter box. This makes it impossible to get acurrate color on
the projector.

This way the projector will be independent with its own profile.

For Windows XP, I would recomend a recent ATI card like from
the x1XXX series or better. Why becuase youl need the system
(XP) to recognise them as seperate in order for the calibration
to stick. All nvidias currently can not do this in XP (only
in vista but that has another problem in that respect that
when you go to standby the calibration gets lost on resume -
not a bug only a feature.)

The Spyder3Utility should take care of that by reflashing your video corrections after standby... though there may be other factors involved, so I'd love to hear from people on whether this works on their particular systems.

Re: Quad monitors. Getting there!

2007-11-28 by Randy L

Wow, good thing I did not open my new video cards yet. I was planning
to load XP on the new machine. they are nvidias.

Problem though, the reason I bought nvidias is that in the vid card
control panel in the driver color control there is curves adjustment.
In the nvidia driver the curves control allows you to move the shadow
and highlight ends of each channel curve independently. The ATI does not.

For some strange reason I am getting strong yellow in the shadows on 2
different projectors which I can remove successfully with that curves
adjustment with out screwing up the highlights with the nvidia. If the
calibration works this might not be a problem anymore but if
calibration dosent I can always resort to it.

Maybe I should upgrade to Vista?

Thanks for the tips. I was hoping someone would answer eventually.

Hi CD and thanks for getting in on this. I was hoping spyder 2 would
do the job. I am really not ready to upgrade to spyder 3 yet. But if I
didnt have to buy vista and could use nvidia drivers I might. Please
read my last post to nslim.

I also wonder if the video cards need to be matched? Or be better if
different?

Thanks!

Videocard utility adjustements are to be avoided if you are hardware calibrating your display. At worst, the two are separate modes: either the video card utilitys adjust the LUTs, or the ICC profile data does. At best, you are adjusting a seperate LUT table in the Videocard software first, and a custom profile set on top of them, which can still be less than ideal. The best practices for using ICC profiles is to not install, or at least not invoke, the videocard utility at all.

That may solve some problems, but appears to produce others, so choose carefully. The only clearcut "upgrade" would be to a Mac, which is probably not an option...

Sorry, my brain is just in Spyder3 mode these days...

Well, matched might have more compatibility and confusion issues than mismatched... but it would offer a consistant feature set. Your call...

Re: Quad monitors. Getting there!

Hello CD, I appriciate the help. Anyway do I realize that I dont need
the Video driver correction with a correct profile. But if the
calibration is not to my liking I can always resort to driver adjustment.

So If I get spyder 3 can I use XP with ndivia drivers and not adjust
them in anyway and profile both cards? Or just use the windows
driver? But I tried useing the windows driver on a ati card and it was
unstable. Profiling 2 cards must be a new area for you guys. If it
matters I bought sli enabled cards but I never game so I will probably
 never use sli.

We've been doing it for several years on the Mac. The issues under Windows are mostly about getting the videocard software to stay out of the way, and getting Windows to assign profiles to all displays. All we can do is provide the calibration and profiles, the drivers and OS have to do their part for it all to work correctly...

Re: Quad monitors. One more try, UPDATE!

Hello, I thought it was time to share my experience. The ndivia cards
would not load the profiles with or with out the microsoft color
applet. I switched to ATI and it works flawlessly. Whether the applet
has anything to do with it I do not know. But ATI has this down. Dont
enable the Catalyst control center or even install hydravision.

Also I profiled my projector at the default projector settings like
the on screen instructions said to do and the results are astonishing
with my sub thousand dollar HC 1500 Mitsubishi projector. I never
thought it could look that good. Wow. I did get a 16ft repeater USB
cable for the spyder. No problems there. FYI.
