RGB puzzle

RGB puzzle

2006-03-14 by Bailey Donnally

My PrintFix Pro arrived only two days after I ordered it. Great! I
made some profiles and they were very good. I even printed some black
and white and they came out (drum roll) black and white.

But I am puzzled. When I was reading patches (on the 225 patch
sample) the Lab reading shown near the lower left corner seems
reasonable, but the RGB values make no sense at all. They seem to be
related to the position on the chart, not RGB values. What is going
on here? What does this RGB mean?

Those are just telling you what the "pure" values of the RGBs in the
target are at those locations. Only the Lab values that are displayed
for a patch (after taking a measurement) correspond to actual measured values.

The unprofiled RGB values are the numbers that were sent out to the printer (the red patch would be 255, 0, 0) while the Lab values relate to the measurements that are taken from the printed patches.

The ??? values show when you haven't yet measured a patch. Try
hitting the back arrow to look at the patch you have just read :-)

It will only show you measurements when you have measurements.

If you move the cursor to a patch which is "empty" (will be white), then
there are no measurements to display.

As Tom says, while you're measuring, the cursor always gets moved one
slot ahead, to the next empty space, so until you've measured something
there, it doesn't know what to tell you.

The Lab values are measured values. As the autoforward moves the active patch to the next unmeasured patch, there are never an Lab numbers to display. Use the arrow keys to move back through the measured patches, and Lab values will be displayed. Move forward into unmeasured patches, and question marks will appear.
