One Foot in Mac - One in Windows XP

One Foot in Mac - One in Windows XP

2008-09-21 by davedoughman

I'm moving from Windows XP to a new iMac w/Leopard 10.5 with Windows
XP running under VMWare Fusion - (so I can use my Photoshop CS3
(windows version), print with Qimage and run a few other windows only
pgms) All is running well - at the moment

When CS4 comes out I'll get it in the Mac version, (student discount)
but continue to print mostly with Qimage under Windows

Just ordered Spyder3 Studio - (have been using Spyder & Printfix Pro
on my old Windows XP computer)

How do I set up my system using Spyder3 Studio for both Mac & Windows use?
- Monitor Profile under Leopard? Save under what file name?
- Printer/paper profiles saved under Windows for Qimage use just like
I'm now doing on my Windows computer. Any issues I should know about?

- Should I do some photo printing from the Mac side with iPhoto or
directly from CS4 Mac Version how do I save & select my mac printing
profiles? Can I save any new parer profiles I make under both the Mac
& Windows sides or must I reread the papers for each?

- I assume my existing Windows paper profiles should be reasonably
accurate until I re-profile them with Spyder3 Studio

Sound confusing? Try sitting here.

Dave

First off, your DataColor products will work with the same serial
number on Mac and PC; most aspects of them should function under a
good emulator. Next; once you move to Mac Photoshop ( and I bet Mac
Lightroom in the long run) you will want to look for Mac printing
solutions. It just makes sense to be doing of it the same platform.
Crossplatform is possible; it's just not optimal.

Finally: yes, it's possible to manage color under virtualization; but
as you are finding, it's not trivial. For instance, the display
profile apps use under Windows on a Mac will get applied correctly,
but the LUTs that match them will not; so you have a hybrid of PC
display profile and Mac LUTs; so you have to be careful that they work
correctly together. For printing you may or may not be able to use PC
built profiles under emulation. You might have to rebuild them through
the exact emulation workflow you are printing under. In the the
longrun Lightroom may offer the printing tools you need, making
printing under emulation unnecessary.

While I await CS4 to buy the Mac version - if I profile my monitor under
Leopard /mac side will the profile be valid under the Windows side or
must I also profile the monitor under the Windows side?

Since I'll be printing under windows I assume all print/paper profiling
should be Windows side only.

In the mean time I'll check out Lightroom for the Mac

Eagerly looking forward to CS4

Many thanks for your excellent assistance

You will need to load our display calibration software twice, once on
the Mac, then on Windows on the Mac, and run it twice (once each way)
to provide the Mac profile that will set the LUTs, and the Windows
profile that will be used by your Windows copy of Photoshop...
